Animal Behavior PBL Activities

Virtual Tour
Zoos, Aquariums, and Wildlife Preserves
At the beginning of each new semester, I will ask the students
some questions to see if they have ever had any "wild aninal"
encounters, or if they have ever visited any kind of zoo or
aquarium that is outside of our Chicago area. I have found
that very few of my students have had either of these
experiences. It is from this, that I have created this activity.
The students were to pick out a zoo, aquarium, or wildlife
preserve from anywhere in our world. They were then to
create a online poster for each of their choices. They were to
be creative and try to highlight all of the attractions that the
place had to offer the visitors. I told the students to make the
poster in a way that any person looking at that poster would
say---"This place is really cool. I just have to go and visit this
place".
For many of us, maybe the Internet might be the only way we
might be able to "visit" some of these places.
Hope you enjoy your trip.
Endangered Animal Zoo
This acivity was created out of my real belief in the banner
that I have on my Animal Behavior page on this website.
If we want to conserve a organism, we need to first
understand it. The understanding only comes from what
we are taught.
My students have each chosen a endangered animal. They
were to first learn about the physical characteristics and
how that animal spends its life. They then were to look
into why that animal was endangered, what was being
done to help it, and who was doing the helping. Many of
these animals will only survive because of "captive
breeding programs", so the students were then going to
look at the "zoos" that were going to be home for these
animals. The students also "created" 2 pictures where
they would "create" what they would picture the zoo
habitat to be like. Lastly I wanted the students to contact
"experts" that could possibly add some thoughts for my
students.
On some of the webpages you will also see some crossword
puzzles that the students made.
It is my hope that if just 1 person were to learn and
understand, and if this led to the helping and conserving
our world---then our efforts are worth it.

Animals From Space
This project involves the students working with satillite
tracking of an assortment of animals across the globe. The
students will take real life data, pinpoint the locations on the
map, and then answer an array of questions. This project
comes out of the belief that humans are very much
restricting the movements and natural habitats of animals.
We, meaning humans and the rest of the animals world,
must all be able to call Earth our Home.
Music Video
This project involves the students putting together their own
"Music Video" along the theme "We All Can Make a
Difference". The video for this project will feature
animals/nature/organizations that make a difference in our
world, and this will all be put to music. The students will
work with a variety of video technologies as well as "blue
screen" so that they can become a "star" in their own
productions
